The story of Hertz winning out against Zipcar for carsharing at the Ohio State University would be so much cooler if one of the cars you could rent by the hour is the Lotus-developed biofueled Antarctic speeder you can see on the left up there.   Reports of the premature death of the Suzuki Kizashi are apparently… premature. After a story surfaced yesterday detailing Suzuki’s cancellation of its mid-sized sedan program, the scribes at Automotive News went to the source to get the details. Suzuki spokesman Jeff Holland told AN, “The production version will debut at this year’s New York auto show in April.” So there. When the Kizashi concept was revealed at last year’s New York show, it garnered a fair amount of praise thanks to the sedan’s swooping lines and road-hugging proportions. The Kizashi has been spied doing laps around the Nurburgring and for a mainstream mid-size sedan that can’t be a bad thing.

  Panasonic first showed off its HD-PLC system at CES in 2004 and, being vehicle nuts, we completely ignored it. Other than letting all our gadgets speak to each other over a house’s electrical lines, it did nothing for what we drive.

  Now, Panasonic is announcing the capability of its PLC system to also communicate with that electric car charging in your garage. Officially, Panasonic is touting the technology in the name of security. The company claims that electric automobile owners can view video from an in-car camera to make sure their EV is charging safe and sound, while keeping tabs on the charging status of their cars from inside their home.

  Unofficially, The Earth Times speculates that the system could also transfer music to the car’s stereo, along with sending travel routes and movies to the in-car entertainment system. The setup could also include a command to adjust the seats for individual drivers.

  HD-PLC Magazine says Panasonic’s PLC has the potential to make electric vehicles lighter, replacing looms of wiring with a smaller, simpler, PLC-linked wiring system. We’ll have to wait until Panasonic’s press conference this week at CES for the official announcement.

  When American super swimmer Michael Phelps won eight gold metals and broke seven world records at the 2008 Olympics, he became an instant celebrity. Since the Olympics were held in the land of the Great Wall, Phelps is perhaps an even larger sensation in China. In fact, Phelps is so big in the Middle Kingdom that he has just scored what’s believed to be the largest endorsement deal of any western celebrity, a $1 million deal to pitch the all-new Mazda6. Mazda is spending massive bucks on a pitchmanin an effort to capitalize on its recent success in China. The outgoing 6, named Rui Yi in China, experienced a 43 percent sales increase in 2008, outpacing Mazda’s already impressive brand-wide increase of 27 percent.

  China is currently the world’s third largest market, behind only Japan and the United States. The world’s most populous nation is expected by many analysts to surpass Japan in this category as soon as this year, and the US could be in the rear view mirror by 2020. Mazda spending huge to land an American hero shows goes some way to showing just how important the growing market is for the Japanese automaker.

The 2.7-liter TDV6 currently used is good for 190 hp and 324 lb-ft. The new engine will be Jaguar’s 3.0-liter twin turbocharged V6 diesel and will come in two flavors: one with 237 hp for the Discovery 3, and one with 272 hp and 420 lb-ft for the Range Rover Sport.

  Those numbers are down on the figures achieved by the same lump in the Jaguar, at 275 hp and 443 lb-ft, but even the 237 hp variant should give the 190 hp 2.7-liter a proper shellacking. Even though the 2.7-liter, might remain as an option, the same engine swap yielded a 12% increase in gas mileage in the Jaguar. With the 3.0-liter providing more power on less fuel, it makes us think the 2.7-liter will be shown the door either by Land Rover or its customers.
